What makes a trade inquiry actionable?

A concise framework for presenting product, volume, destination, delivery, and counterparty context from the beginning.

01

Begin with the product, not the pitch

An actionable inquiry identifies the exact commodity, grade or specification, acceptable origin parameters, and any viable alternatives. Broad requests create broad answers. Specific requests allow counterparties to establish fit quickly.

When a formal specification sheet exists, reference it. When it does not, list the few parameters that would decide whether the product is acceptable.

02

Define the commercial frame

Indicative volume, cadence, destination, preferred delivery basis, and timing belong in the first serious exchange. These details are not final commitments. They are the shared coordinates of the conversation.

State whether the inquiry is exploratory, time-sensitive, or part of an established recurring requirement. This helps every party calibrate its response.

03

Make authority visible

Clarify the role of the person or organization presenting the opportunity. Buyers, suppliers, mandates, and intermediaries may require different verification and communication paths.

A productive introduction respects confidentiality while still giving each side enough context to decide whether to proceed.
